Map of Cook Islands
THE beautiful Cook Islands are spread over an immense area of the central South Pacific Ocean. The main island is known as Rarotonga and it is here that most of the population live. The island is roughly circular in shape, surrounded by white coral sand beaches, inner lagoon and fringing reef. The centre of Rarotonga features large picturesque peaks, covered by rainforest and it is possible to trek right across the island.
The outer islands are diverse. Those in the northern region comprise many beautiful atolls such as Manihiki and the famous Aitutaki. In the south, the islands are different in composition, many featuring a raised fossilised coral reef structure around the outside of the island called makatea.
The main holiday destinations are Rarotonga and Aitutaki.
